    1 Year of Sweetness!

    1 Year of Sweetness!

OMG OMG OMG! As of today we're celebrating the 1 year anniversary of opening the Sugar Bunch online store! This has been, without a doubt, one of my proudest accomplishments. I'm so proud of the journey we've been on over the last year. Every up, every down, every uncertainty and every change this little shop has endured has been an important part of our growth as a brand and community.

I actually started the first iteration of Sugar Bunch back in 2012. I was recently married annnnnnnd recently laid off. These 2 life circumstances congealed and birthed my first entrepreneurial endeavor, a service based business doing flowers AND photography for primarily weddings. I went hard for a couple months building the brand and getting a few clients, mostly friend referrals. I eventually secured a full time job and my little wedding business was placed on the back burner. I still did some side jobs here and there but definitely didn't make it a priority. In and out of different day jobs over the years I started to feel complacent. My career wasn't as fulfilling as I had hoped. Working for big companies and agencies a lot of the time lacked the creativity I had gone to school for and craved my entire life. I NEEDED something for myself, a creative outlet of expression I just wasn't getting.  After agonizing, silently complaining and searching for what I SHOULD be doing I turned back to that thing I started now years ago. This time I wanted to see it through and really put all my effort into it. So I rebranded, refocused and got to work. I once again introduced Sugar Bunch to the world.  I had some new clients, did some in person events and things started to roll.

Most of 2015 was spent building this new (ish) business. I worked hard at it. And I did gain back the creativity in my life that was missing. But...the work was physically intensive, I was doing it alone and I started to feel fatigued. At this point I was about to turn 30, 3 years past my "special day" and to be honest weddings just weren't what I was into anymore. Don't get me wrong, I love weddings. It's amazing when 2 people come together in love, I get down on the dance floor like nobody's business and still gush over a beautifully crafted event. I had just come into a place in my life where I didn't want them to be my everything. With the services I had planned to provide, it didn't seem like a viable option to continue if I was burnt out on weddings.

Back to the drawing board. I kicked around some other ideas, collaborated with friends and did some short-lived projects until eventually I just started creating. I did photo shoots, video projects and designs just for the fun of it. This got me energized again and lead me to creating a lifestyle blog, with no real plans of expanding. I was just enjoying taping back into my creativity without any rules or restrictions and doing the things I was really passionate about. As my excitement continued to grow, I yearned for more ways to share my art with the world and at some point thought why not try my designs on some shirts and see if anyone would be into it. Turns out...some people were into it O_O

One year later and I couldn't be happier with where I am in my business. Yeah I said it MY BUSINESS! I couldn't be happier with where I'm going and where I plan to take the brand. This shop has truly become my passion and I'm so thankful to the many people who have supported it since day one and throughout year one. Along with the tons of design ideas that run through my head all day, my goal for the next chapter of Sugar Bunch is to connect with all of the lovely people that have come along for the ride. I want to share more of the process, I want to connect more in person and I want to get YOU involved in the future of our brand and products. You guys like some cool ass shit, lets bond over it. Also, staying true to why I started all of this in the first place, Sugar Bunch will always encourage and celebrate creative expression. When you can't find the words or just don't want to say them, you can always wear it or put it up on your wall.

I used to quietly dream of having a shop of my very own one day but didn't think it was possible. Come to think of it, long before I started dating my future husband we had an idea to start a T-shirt business. We had one "business meeting" and lot's of "oh yeah, we should still do that" conversations that never came to fruition. But it looks like things have come full circle :)

So from the bottom of my heart, thank you. Thank you for supporting my dream, thank you for liking what I do and thank you for sticking around for more to come. This time I'm in it for the long haul and it's pretty rad to do it with all of you.

    (like seriously, so super sincerely)

    RTX Austin 2017 - Recap

    RTX Austin 2017 - Recap

So the dust has settled but the afterglow remains. Every time I think of RTX Austin  2017, it's a bitter sweet feeling. Sweet because I had such a blast, but I'm all bitter that it's over.

As I have mentioned before this was my first time exhibiting as an artist at this show or anywhere! Admittedly I was a bit nervous. I had no way of knowing if what I had prepared would be sufficient as far as my booth display, my merch items and supplies. With the help of some experienced con goers I had a base but of course every brand and every show is different (so I hear). What if my booth looked terrible, what if I forget something like the credit card reader, what if I didn't bring enough to sell, what if no one comes by at all??? O_O These are the questions that plagued me leading up to the event. I'm happy to report that nothing catastrophic happened!

I had plenty to sell, I didn't forget anything important, I met so many amazing people and my booth looked pretty damn good if I do say so myself.

Though I'm really proud of myself/the brand and consider it a great success, I definitely learned a lot and have a lot of ideas for next time. That's right I said next time! I've caught the bug and this is definitely something I want to do again, at future RTX events and other shows alike! I'd love to have more design options to share, a variety of products and will remember to drink more water early on :P

I put a lot of blood, sweat and tears into this effort (ok thankfully no blood and very few tears) but I have to give a shout out to everyone who helped because I COULD NOT have done it alone. My very good friend Miranda was my amazing partner all weekend helping me manage the booth, keep me company and everything in between. So thankful to have a friend like her that offered to come out to Austin and help me like it ain't no thang! My husband Adam was a constant source of encouragement and support leading up to the show. He even helped me lug all the product and break down after the show.

The guardians that volunteered for the show out of their passion and kind hearts were a life saver all weekend and just about the sweetest people ever. Roosterteeth and the incredibly hard working people that run and put on the event are rockstars and magic makers. I thrived because of their dedication and professionalism. I worked with a handful of incredible vendors to provide my products, special shout out to Not Soap, Radio for the most amazing collab pieces. Last but not least, the fans and community! I can't extend enough gratitude to everyone that came by my booth that I got to meet and chat with, everyone that purchased anything and all the people showing support from afar on social media with kind words and following my posts all weekend.

I'm truly humbled by this experience. To be able to create and show off my passion with the world is an honor and having so many people take an interest is just...well I have no words. Just from the bottom of my heart, thank you.

I'm counting down the days until RTX Austin 2018 to see all of those lovely people again and hopefully lots of new faces! Off of this con high, I'm brewing all sorts of ideas, new desings/products and all sorts of fun stuff. So please hang with me, this is just the beginning ;)

    Sincerely the sincerest,
    <3 Jess
